January 13, 2026: Statement from the City of Colwich on request sent to Sedgwick County Commissioners:
The City of Colwich is aware of concerns related to a potential data center development near our community.
Let me be clear, this is not a type of development the City of Colwich supports near our area.
While no formal application has been submitted, it is important to understand that the City does not have zoning or land-use authority in the area in question, and that authority rests with Sedgwick County.
Today, the City of Colwich sent a request to all Sedgwick County Commissioners for a moratorium (a pause to gather more information), outlining several key areas of concern, including water usage, electrical demand, noise and operational impacts, and other environmental considerations.
That said, Colwich has been proactive by working with county and state partners and continuing a Comprehensive Plan update that has been underway since March of last year that addresses how and where future growth should occur.
Colwich will remain vigilant, engaged, and committed to using every legal option available to advocate for responsible development and to protect our community.
Thank you to everyone who has reached out and taken the time to engage on this issue.
-Jay Purkey, Mayor of Colwich, KS
